In Honor Of The First Mother - Before Breath Was Capital

>>  Thursday, May 8, 2014

There's lots of dates surrounding the eventual and official Mother's Day in 1914.  Different groups worked on making this happen for decades before it did. But I'd like to look not at the first Mother's Day... But the First Mother instead.

I wonder sometime what it must have been like eons ago when each specific birth was critical to man's survival. A time when we were pushing our numbers just to diversify the genetic pool. A time when there were so few humans that each woman who bore another human was revered. Indeed... A time when all life-bringers were honored. Nurturing was a cherished gift.

What must it have been like for a First Mother who's numbers had now sufficiently expanded that the miracles of birth and life were commonized? What did she think when life itself was commodified? When breath became capital?

I see a First Mother who spoke loudly in protest of killing the creatures in the forests... A First Mother who pleaded with others in the tribe that trees and plants would sustain them. A First Mother who wept when the great aurochs were made unfree and held captive for the purposes of man. A First Mother who's dutiful gathering of sustenance was halted to tend to cattle instead... What did this First Mother think when she stole the milk from the goat or cow?

And what did this First Mother do when her husband, the keeper of chattel and cows, proposed the idea of not only consuming the milk but who made it necessary to steal the calf as well? I know this First Mother begged for the other mother... She begged for the child-calf... She wailed and sobbed and tried to reason.  But the high priests and other men made mandates from a god who demanded burnt calves flesh... So her pleas met with no mercy.

And soon it was that the First Mother would have her own sons sacrificed to greed. To violence. To wars. And to death.

To all those who still honor the nurturing, life-worshiping vision of the First Mother - Thank you for doing so through your vegan choices.

Happy Mother's Day to those who never surrendered the idea of love or World Peace:

A Mother's Devotion - As Intense For Animals As For Humans

>>  Thursday, May 5, 2011

Soon it's Mother's Day and who can get enough videos and images of maternal perfection and tender young innocence!

Now, no one has to watch 10 videos or even one for that matter, to know that this nurturing bond is instinctual and is the same for every species.  I even imagine that with nonhuman animals this desire to protect, nurse, and "mother" is even more intense than with humans.  Human mothers have a multitude of distractions like telephone calls from well wishers, emails to answer, shopping lists, favorite television shows, assorted hobbies they may retreat to, and many even have "jobs" that they must return to.  So the focus on baby, while intense - Doesn't hold the same 24 hour "devotion" as it does with animals.

This causes baby-making in their non-human world to be slightly different than our own. That said, knowing how very important their infants are to them... Wouldn't you think we'd show a bit more reverence for that?  It is, aside from their lives, all that they have!

So please if you are eating animal products, remember that the entire industry hinges on the separation of mother and baby.  It is a standard course for the way they operate. None of the "production animals" ever get to experience the maternal drives many humans take for granted.

And as you watch over your own child - With love and tenderness... Won't you take a moment to consider the needs and wants of these animal-mothers too?  Do not pay men to rip suckling calves from their mothers... Do not sanction sows in crates that separate them from their newborn piglets... Do not condone housing hens as (fertile or unfertile) egg laying machines.  Don't support any practice that defiles this sacred bond between a mother and her young.  Please?

Happy Mother's Day to all who nurture Life!

Thank You Vegan Mothers - You Help Create a Better World!

>>  Sunday, May 9, 2010

A special thank you to all Mothers raising a vegan child! As if parenting weren't hard enough! You've had to keep yourself in optimal care giving condition - plus learn about sound nutrition for your child. And of all the vegan mothers I have met, I say with no exceptions that they take their children's dietary needs more vigorously than most other parents who are raising their kids on different "foods".
But thank you for more than what you put on your child's plate, (and who you leave off)... Thank you for what you put in their heads and hearts... Thank you for creating a better world for them and the generations to follow!
